<p>If you walked up to me a year ago and told me on a weekend in early May Jacksonville would host a <a href="http://www.bikejax.org/2009/05/bury-your-bike-two-pics.html">2-day bike festival</a>, Diplo and Black Kids all in the same weekend I would have called you crazy. But that&#8217;s exactly what happened last weekend. Jacksonville is growing up fast and it&#8217;s all due to people in the city making things happen.</p>
<p><a href="http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&#038;videoid=56852066">Bury Your BIke Two</a><br/><object width="425px" height="360px" ><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"/><param name="wmode" value="transparent"/><param name="movie" value="http://mediaservices.myspace.com/services/media/embed.aspx/m=56852066,t=1,mt=video"/><embed src="http://mediaservices.myspace.com/services/media/embed.aspx/m=56852066,t=1,mt=video" width="425" height="360" allowFullScreen="true" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent"></embed></object></p>
<p>Here are some awesome bike tricks posted by the Urban Velo site. They also publish a magazine about urban bike culture called, hmmm, <a href="http://urbanvelo.org/urban-velo-13-available-online/">Urban Velo</a></p>
<p><object width="400" height="270"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="movie" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=4348711&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1" /><embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=4348711&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="400" height="270"></embed></object>

<p>Fixed Magazine produces a top notch publication with great photos, layouts and art direction. You can tell they put a lot of effort into the design. You can <a href="http://www.fixed-mag.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/fixed-issue-2-web-pdf.pdf">download Issue 2 here</a>. Issue 3 coming soon at <a href="http://www.fixed-mag.com">fixed-mag.com</a></p>

<p><strong>Update! I&#8217;m giving away a free Arturo shirt to the person who comes up with the best reason why it matters that Arturo is moving to Springfield.</strong> </p>
<p><a href="http://arturoclothingco.blogspot.com">Arturo Clothing</a>, a local clothing maker and friend of Urban Jacksonville, <a href="http://arturoclothingco.blogspot.com/2009/02/big-news.html">announced on their blog</a> they are moving operations to the BBB Complex at 1520 Main Street:</p>
<blockquote><p>We are moving our screen printing supplies into the Burro Bags shop. This will be a great opportunity for both us and Burro to feed ideas off of each other and expand our companies!!</p></blockquote>
<p><iframe width="425" height="240" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps/sv?cbp=12,279.3485633286578,,0,5&amp;cbll=30.342328,-81.654337&amp;panoid=&amp;v=1&amp;hl=en&amp;gl=us"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&amp;source=embed&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=1520+N+Main+St,+Jacksonville,+FL+32206&amp;sll=30.326221,-81.657929&amp;sspn=0.687512,1.224976&amp;g=jacksonville,+florida&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;z=14&amp;iwloc=addr&amp;layer=c&amp;cbll=30.342328,-81.654337&amp;panoid=GqEr-mSZOJhAdILoy_pATQ&amp;cbp=12,279.3485633286578,,0,5&amp;ll=30.353176,-81.650476" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small></p>
<p>This is significant because it not only increases the retail footprint of the BBB Warehouse, but of Springfield. Main Street can now boast four lifestyle retail businesses in one location. All thanks to the <a href="http://www.srghomes.com">benevolent landlord SRG</a>.</p>

<h3>5 Reasons Why The Arturo Move Matters</h3>
<p>Sure, you can chalk one in the win column for my <a href="http://www.urbanjacksonville.info/2009/01/14/urban-jacksonville-2009-predictions/">2009 Predictions</a> (yes, I&#8217;m keeping score), but it&#8217;s bigger than that. Here are five reasons why the move matters:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>More bodies on Main Street</strong> means more money will be pumped into local businesses like Chan&#8217;s and the BBB itself. It will also give the appearance of activity and set the tone that something is happening on Main Street.</li>
<li><strong>It&#8217;s a vote for Springfield retail</strong> illustrating the environment in the neighborhood is favorable enough to pick up and move current operations.</li>
<li><strong>Power in numbers</strong> demonstrates to the benevolent landlord that there may be something to this little retail experiment, encouraging them to keep it going indefinitely.</li>
<li><strong>Concentration of creative energy</strong> keeps everyone inspired and makes it more fun. Working in a vacuum sucks.
<li><strong>Fill in the blank</strong> and tell me why you think it matters. Yes, I know it&#8217;s a cop out, but I gotta go get ready for work suckas. <em>The person with the best answer gets a free Arturo shirt!</em></li>
</ol>
<p>Here is a <a href="http://www.urbanjacksonville.info/2008/06/09/springfield-buyers-market-lodge-story/">background of the BBB Complex</a> and a link to the<br />
<a href="http://papernstitchblog.com/2009/02/10/shop-local/">Arturo Clothing feature on the Paper n Stitch blog</a>.</p>

<p>I got to thinking &#8220;why aren&#8217;t there any bike lanes on Main Street?&#8221; Seems like a no brainer, so I asked and here&#8217;s what I found out.</p>
<blockquote><p>Main Street is a four lane, State and Federal Highway which carries so much more traffic than 8th Street that it is considered unsafe to allow bike lanes.</p></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://www.sparcouncil.org">SPAR</a> inquired about incorporating bike lanes in the Main Street construction plans, but the <a href="http://www.dot.state.fl.us/">FDOT</a> would not approve them. Jerks.</p>

The crossing signal where Johnny Jones was killed while crossing the street on his bike was faulty.<a href="http://bikejax.blogspot.com/2008/07/update-on-johnnys-ghost-bike.html">Watch the video here</a>. Within 20 minutes, the city sends someone out to fix it as WTLV is taping a story. Go citizen journalism!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.metrojacksonville.com/content/view/850/118/">What Can Jacksonville Learn from Portland, Maine?</a><br />
Portland gives us the opportunity to see what an urban core can resemble when we work to improve our existing landscape, with affordable elements, such as clear wayfaring signage, well-design parks and most of all&#8230;. designing for the pedestrian first.</p>

<p><a href="http://burrobags.blogspot.com/2008/07/improvement.html">Burro Bags just posted a huge update</a> on their blog. Highlights include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Yesterday we moved in a screen printing shop that opens up a lot of opportunity to make some damn good looking product.</li>
<li>More ROOM &#8211; We are making our bags slightly larger in every size.</li>
<li>Vegan friendly &#8211; Our original leather tag with &#8216;Burro&#8217; hand burned into each one will be set aside as an option. We are replacing it with cloth tags.</li>
<li>Adjusting straps &#8211; Adding finger loops to the ends</li>
<li>Visibility is a concern &#8211; Screen printing our bags with reflective paint</li>
<li>Screen printing &#8211; Handfuls of bag will be up with artwork by local artists printed on the outside and maybe inside. We&#8217;re going crazy with this.</li>
</ul>

<p><a href="http://www.myspace.com/theroyaltreatmentdjs">Royal Treatment Records</a>, <a href="http://www.urbanjacksonville.info/2008/05/14/podcast-episode-15-burro-bags-grand-opening/">Burro Bags</a>, <a href="http://www.zombiebikes.com/">Zombie Bikes</a> and gone, but not forgotten, <a href="http://www.urbanjacksonville.info/2008/03/24/inertia-records-and-books-is-closing-zombie-bikes-is-opening/">Inertia</a>. That&#8217;s what most people call 1520 Main Street in Springfield. Hardly anyone ever calls it The Buyers Market Lodge, but that was the original name, current name, future name, who knows. Tony Allegretti gives a nice <a href="http://theurbancoredotcom.blogspot.com/2008/06/blowing-up.html">history of The Buyers Market Lodge</a>. Long live Main Street! Here are a few excerpts:</p>
<blockquote><p>The Buyers Market Lodge was a concept/brainchild/idea that Triclops (owner of some bar on 6th &#8211; <a href="http://www.myspace.com/shantytownpub">Shantytown</a>) and I and our benevolent landlord (<a href="http://www.srghomes.com">SRG</a>) came up with to do three things. (1) Create a &#8220;place&#8221; on Main St, (2) create a few no to low paying green collar jobs, and (3) create a shopping experience of simple yet sometimes hard to find things the new urbanist (really any body, but it sounds sweeter) would want and need.</p></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/urbanjacksonville/2459409218/" title="Buro Bags by urbanjacksonville, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2416/2459409218_ab1069a4dd.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Buro Bags" /></a></p>
<blockquote><p>Matt and Chris (Burro Bags) hand craft these custom bags to your specs (if you wish) and they use recycled materials. Right now they&#8217;re kickin vinyl from billboards. Who said clear channel was rubbish? Now you can wear clear channel&#8217;s rubbish! They also pad bags for electronics/computers etc.</p></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/urbanjacksonville/2459408912/" title="Zombie Bikes by urbanjacksonville, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2375/2459408912_35f5bdde5c.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Zombie Bikes" /></a></p>
<blockquote><p>the real soft spot in my heart is the zombie bikes. These guys are solid. My daughters bike was swiped and she is just learning to ride. I dropped in to the shop (its like the taxi teevee show only greasier) and walked out with a spider man special. Under $20 and built to spill.</p></blockquote>
<p>Thanks for the history lesson Tony!</p>
