Partisan the Sea Updates – 5 days away

This Saturday we made some significant progress cleaning up the space and getting ready for the Partisan the Sea show. We moved doors, drywall, trash and swept up about 100 years worth of dust.

Partisan the Sea - 5 Days Away

Lighting, Loft Tours and Bathrooms
Our decision to use the West side of the building instead of the entire space is turning out to be a genius move. I went back to the Churchwell Lofts building Saturday night to see how the lighting was and the West side of the building is good as is. The East side on the other hand would have required significant lighting. People will be able to use the bathrooms in the lofts so we are good on the bathrooms.

There will be loft tours of the Churchwell Lofts so this will be a good chance to get a sneak peek of these pretty awesome units. The loft tours will feature even more artwork from local artists Emmy Cerveny, Susan Britt and Kathy Stark

Here is the schedule over the next couple of days

  • Monday 22nd – Cleaning and painting if anyone wants to help. Bring a roller and a paint tray if you come. I also need to move some tables so whenever there are more than 3 people there we can move the tables.
  • Tuesday 23rd – During the day they will be mopping and setting up fans.
  • Wednesday 24th – Hanging posters and setting up
  • Thursday 25th – Hanging posters and setting up until everything is done. The show will be entirely set up and ready to go on Thursday night, with the exception of any late posters. This includes any AIGA get out the vote posters, etc.

More updates and photos tomorrow.

Now for the actual show, there was so much interest in the show we opened it up to public submissions. We’re keeping the artist list updated so check that to see who’s in the show so far. Our most recent blog post El Jefe is gonna rock us all night gives a little teaser of what you can expect to see at the show.

We’ll have posters for sale, political giveaways and a raffle. Are you into antique furniture? There will be great deals on antique furniture reclaimed from the depths of the Churchwell building. Most stuff is 100+ years in age. Could be some good deals. Bring your wallet! You probably want to clear your event calendar for this one. Srsly.

Partisan the Sea - A Politically Opinonated Poster Show

About 6 months ago I came up with and idea to throw a political poster show. In the heat of the Hillary/Obama Democratic nomination process I couldn’t stop thinking about how we are living in historic times. It’s possible that in a little over three months we may have a black man as president. With this show I want to capture some of the energy and wonder I think this country is going to experience between now and November.

So, I present to you: Partisan the Sea – A Politically Opinonated Poster Show

The first step was finding a place to hold the show. I was lucky that Shaan Batten, who owns Nest Living, introduced me to Mike Cassala from The Churchwell Lofts. The ground-floor retail space of the Churchwell building is absolutely perfect for this show. There is about 4,000 square feet of space with 20+ foot ceilings, huge wood support beams and drywall. I couldn’t ask for a more perfect place.

I wanted to make sure the show was open on two nights, with one of those nights being the last Art Walk before the November election. I did something similar with the The Color of Munny, the last art show I organized, and that turned out awesome. We had a great turnout on both nights with the Art Walk night being by far the best night of the show. The Black Kids played, which was awesome, so I wanted to make sure music was a big part of this show too.

Music will be a big part of both nights of Partisan the Sea. The Royal Treatment will be DJing both nights, followed by America Del Sur and Willie Evans Jr. on Friday September 26th and The N Word and Tough Junkie on Wednesday October 1st. There will also be after parties each night at Shantytown with more music to be announced.

The fun doesn’t stop with music, art and drinks. The Jacksonville Chapter of the AIGA will also be a huge part of the show. They will be providing an educational component including Ballot Design: Good vs. Bad ballot design, along with a Top 10 of good ballot design and Design Battle: Obama vs. McCain campaign materials. Woot! Also thanks to my coworker and AIGA member Varick from nGen Works for designing the beautiful Partisan the Sea website.

FINALLY, none of this would have been possible without my boyz from Urban Art Warfare and Halftone Def Studios who designed and printed the posters and have been with me every step of the way.
