Steadfast at Summertime in the City 2009

Steadfast from DC

Steadfast was raised in Ft. Washington, MD. Whether it was his sister playing the flute or his grandmother practicing with the church choir, it appeared early on that music would be a mainstay in his lifelong diet. He began writting in 1993 after listening to Wu Tang Clan’s debut album and after cultivating his style he linked up with The Homeless Society, a group of emcees and producers repping the New York, Maryland and DC areas.

He’s now on Social Light Sounds records and will be appearing at Summertime in the City 2009. You can also find Steadfast on MySpace.

Jacksonville Street Art

So not much is going on with the street art scene right now. There are quite a few throw-ups in Springfield from Snob and Oil but seems like everyone is still on Christmas break. Let’s dispense with the traditional “this isn’t art” conversation, it’s just a broad-based term to encompass all the photos you will see. I think I’m going to start throwing in buffs too. There is something intriguing to me about them.

Springfield Community Garden Update

Springfield Community Garden Mural

Here’s an update on the Springfield community garden

Thanks to a very generous (anonymous!) donor, and a handful of smaller donations we were able to pay to have the concrete footer poured, rebar placed, and blocks laid. We were helped immensely by a couple of homeless men who knew how to lay blocks properly, and offered their help in a, “hey…you’re not doing that right, let me show you,” kind of way. The wall is now drying and awaiting a coat of stucco. Then we can paint a lovely mural on it, to let everyone know about the garden.

It sounds like the next project in the works is a sustainable shed. Listen to Phillip Ramsey and Jennifer McCharen talk about the Springfield Community Garden in an interview we recorded a few months ago.

Here are some tentative hours I found on the Inertia site: Every Saturday and Sunday 12-3pm at 1st and main (Right after The Pearl if you are heading North) – Co-op Garden development and Gardening. bring some tools, some plants, and yourself.

Thanks to Jennifer McCharen for the two wall-repair photos above!
