Summertime in the City This Weekend

Jacksonville’s biggest hip hop event is taking place this Friday and Saturday around the urban core. If you want to know what’s happening, look no further than the Urban Jacksonville Summertime in the City page.

I’ve gathered schedules and artist profiles complete with videos and mp3s. I made this page a one stop shop for all STITC information. I hope this page will serve as a resource for people on the go, at least providing a schedule people can access online with their mobile.

This year’s Summertime in the City triples the number of venues from last year starting TSI on Friday the 31st:

Day 1: Friday, July 31st @ T.S.I.

Headliner: EDAN with Dahga

Where: 333 E. Bay St. (Downtown) Jacksonville, Fl. MAP
When: Doors @ 9pm show @ 10pm
Price: $10.00 21-up, $12.00 18-20

Edan is known for his unique/unlikely take on hip hop culture, where traditional rap songs are often skewed by 60’s rock samples, tape echoes, and foreign language choruses, not to mention the off-beat humor and surrealist imagery incorporated via his lyrics.

Performing live with:

Willie Evans Jr, Paten Locke, Dillon and Tough Junkie. Also featuring The $Big Bucks$ DJ Crew on the 1’s and 2’s all night.

Day 2: B-boys, parties and final blowout

bboy2

Day 2 of Summertime in the City kicks off with a B-Boy battle at the Riverside Arts Market stage. This is sure to be one of the highlights of the 2-day event.

After that head over to Springfield to continue Summertime in the City with a party at the BBB Complex at 1520 Main Street:

FREE KEG from Shantytown Pub (while it lasts)! Cheap pizza slices! Live mural painting by: THURSTO, KIDD YZER, KENSKI and crew. Rotating DJs including $The Big Bucks$, DJ Buttered Cup, Spacemikespace, and more. BICYCLES AND SKATE BOARDS! MAD RED BULL and HIP HOP! PRODUCT GIVEAWAYS!

New Shantytown Sign

The big blowout at Shantytown starts at 10pm. For $5 you can see performances by: Larry Otis (aka Blakhart), Mr. Al Pete, The Elevated Hip Hop Experience, Heavy Flow, The N Word, Dr. Sam Beckett, Dope Sandwich (Savannah Ga.), Steadfast (DC ) and more!

Become a fan of Summertime in the City on Facebook and listen to the Urban Jacksonville Weekly interview with Tough Junkie where we talk tons of Summertime in the City.

Blakhart Performing Day 2 of Summertime in the City

Tough Junkie talks about Larry Otis at 23 minutes and 30 seconds on Urban Jacksonville Weekly yesterday and reveals Larry is officially working with him.

Thanks to Reax Magazine for this artist write up. They have a huge Summertime in the City feature in the most recent issue. Pick it up!

The MC also known as BlakHart is tough to keep track of – the guy’s Internet presence is, like, nil these days, which in this day and age is unheard of, and all the more intriguing for it. Hip Hop Hell says “Jacksonville legend … known for his work with The IG Camp and The Funkmonsta.

Proper EP release coming on HHH Records with Delectable Beats.” His older stuff at BlakHart’s Myspace page showcases a seriously listenable mix of old-school gangsta and clubby refrains, but with a bit of upbeat vibe thrown in. It’s a pretty undeniable style that could easily climb into the mainstream consciousness without sacrificing any cred.

New Urban Jacksonville Weekly Producer Jack Diablo and Tough Junkie Guests

Timely Tough Junkie street art in Brooklyn

If you think Jack Diablo produces the show and turns in for the week, oh no. He’s a true renaissance man. His Urban Jacksonville Weekly duties just kick off the week. He details the rest of his days in his post Gainfully Unemployed.

Between playing in Chicken and Whiskey (Doozers, July 28th) and tweeting for Burro Bags, Jack writes crazy amounts of music articles for EU Jacksonville all wrapped together in one section: http://www.eujacksonville.com/jack.php.

We’re excited to have Jack on the team. He’ll be writing show notes, doing a local music segment and monitoring Twitter and Facebook for any questions you might have for our special Urban Jacksonville Weekly guest: Tough Junkie.

Jack recently wrote an album review of TJ’s Grab What You Can:

Tough Junkie’s initial foray into hip hop may have been akin to a kid with a chemistry set, crafting beats out of tape decks to accompany his rhymes the way an aspiring young scientist might mix the contents of test tubes to get a reaction. Junkie’s been getting a reaction here in Jacksonville for years, a positive one, and now after years in the lab obsessing, perfecting, evolving, the rest of the world will be exposed to one of Jacksonville’s best kept secrets.

We’ll be talking about three topics on the show: Summertime in the City (which Jack also wrote about in EU. Hmmm suprise), Part Duex of Tony’s Uptown Market preview and whatever Jonathan comes up with. Read Jack Diablo’s blog and follow him on Twitter.

The Dope Sandwich website describes this collective better than I could:

Dope Sandwich is a Hip-Hop collective that has taken the city of Savannah GA by storm over the past years. What started as a secret society of MC’s, DJ’s, B-Boys, and Graph artists, DSP is quickly becoming the voice of alternative Hip hop around the coastal South East. The bio goes on to say:

They own a live show that plays like a nonstop party, and truly have something for everyone. You have to see it to believe it.

Blue Collar – Bottoms Up

Lucky you! They are playing the second day of Summertime in the City at Shantytown in Springfield.

Steadfast from DC

Steadfast was raised in Ft. Washington, MD. Whether it was his sister playing the flute or his grandmother practicing with the church choir, it appeared early on that music would be a mainstay in his lifelong diet. He began writting in 1993 after listening to Wu Tang Clan’s debut album and after cultivating his style he linked up with The Homeless Society, a group of emcees and producers repping the New York, Maryland and DC areas.

He’s now on Social Light Sounds records and will be appearing at Summertime in the City 2009. You can also find Steadfast on MySpace.

Edan to Headline Summertime in the City

Edan is known for his unique/unlikely take on hip hop culture, where traditional rap songs are often skewed by 60’s rock samples, tape echoes, and foreign language choruses, not to mention the off-beat humor and surrealist imagery incorporated via his lyrics.

Edan use to like to wear a wig, but he’s grown his hair out since. From an interview with the Gossiping Bitches blog:

GB: You often wear a wig on stage. Did you run that by Kool Keith first?
EDAN: I deaded that wig shit a long time ago…I actually grew my shit out to accurately replace the wig…that was my scheme the whole time! Cats still think I’m rocking some bullshit wig…but thats part of the punchline.

Edan’s just a Rap Beautician:
