Zin Outreach
Photo from a recent zine outreach event

Much Ado About Books is Jacksonville’s premier book festival including a writer’s workshop, children’s chapter, author panel discussions, book sales and signings.

This year, in association with The Zine Collection, Much Ado About Books will feature two zine related panels. Before we go any further, zines are simply self-published pamphlets of all sizes and shapes, often covering subjects overlooked in larger scale publications.

Note: I was not able to find these panel events listed on the website. I expect them to be added soon.

  • Alan Justiss (venerable Jacksonville poet, writer and former running buddy of Charles Bukowski)
  • Duncan Barlow (punk veteran, author of the Super Cell Anemia book, and driving force behind Astrophil Press)

The Zine Collection at the Main Library is one of the first in the Southeast and one of the largest public zine collections in the country.

The mission of the Jacksonville Public Library Zine Collection is to circulate and preserve alternative media resources that inspire readers to re-examine and learn from alternative and under-served voices that represent our community.

The Hum: Jacksonville street art time machine

The Hum zine

Jaxscene has posted issues 1-3 of The Hum zine on their Flickr account. There aren’t any dates on the covers or or pages, but looking through them I’d have to guess they are at least 4-5 years old. The pages of The Hum are a great window into the Jacksonville street art scene from that time. I saw a lot of familiar faces and some who don’t get up any more, at least not around here.

A few years ago a friend of mine gave me Issue #3. Looking back on it now I see a lot of similarities between when I am doing now with Urban Jacksonville and what The Hum was doing back then. It appears to have been a huge inspiration to me, even if it was subconcious.
